Springhill Radio Project
One of the original young people involved in setting up the radio station is Usman, 16, who is now at college studying A levels in Law, History, English Language, and Sociology with his sights set on becoming a barrister.
“Winning a Philip Lawrence Award last year was a great honour because of the prestige behind the Award. Springhill was the first project in Rochdale to receive the Award. I was overwhelmed because I felt our efforts in tackling issues such as bullying were appreciated, and it was a joyful occasion for us all. Going to London was an experience in itself. It was a great time to make friends, learn about the legacy left from Philip Lawrence himself, and to receive the Award. The Award is a great motivator in achieving the real aims of tackling racism and anti-social behaviour in this country. The majority of young people want to make a contribution to the community, awards like this motivate them to bring about differences in the community for the better.”
